In this installment, we have a special guest, Peter64, ubiquitous podcaster of Kernel Panic Oggcast fame. He gives us a decidedly downunda perspective on our topics for the evening. Speaking of topics, we have several: new releases, including Debian "Wheezy" and KDE, updates on previous topics including the Tucnak logging application and the Hamux live distro, based on CentOS. Finally, we take a look at a clever and addictive airplane tracker that uses FAA and ADS-B transponders to let you know where your loved ones are when they're at 35,000 feet. G'day from the team.   • Creating a desktop wallpaper slideshow in GNOME:

    It's actually a built-in feature of GNOME. Briefly, here are the steps:

    • As root, create a new directory in /usr/share/backgrounds (any name you want).
    • In that directory, place your desired background images (or links to them).
    • There's already a directory in /usr/share/backgrounds called cosmos which you can use as a guide.
    • Copy background-1.xml from the cosmos directory into your new directory and edit it to specify your images.

  • Richard points us to one of many articles about ham radio operators helping out during and after Hurricane Sandy. Our sympathies to the victims of hurricane.
  • More about EchoLink and Linux: Richard found the CQiNet project, which includes two applications, Echolinux (an EchoLink client for Linux) and The Bridge, an iLink/EchoLink compatable conference bridge. Of course, there is still the svxlink package, which includes the Qtel Echolink client.
  • C'mon, people, where are my Raspberry Pi suggestions? Russ is still looking for good uses for his Raspberry Pis. Send your suggestions!
  • Google Webfonts are open source fonts that can be embedded in Joomla, WordPress and others, embedded in CSS, or with Javascript. Visit Russ' blog page for an example of Google Webfonts in action.

LHS Episode #054: Unity Ucks

It's the holiday season and we had time for one more podcast this year. We want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and a prosperous New Year in 2011. Linux in the Ham Shack has undergone a few changes and weathered a few challenges in the last 2+ years, but we're still going and expect to be going for a long time to come. We want to thank everyone for their continuing support and continuing listenership. We would not have a podcast without you, and we wouldn't know what to do if you weren't there.

So spend time with your families and enjoy all of the wonderful things that life brings at this time of year, and hopefully all the year through. And if you find the time, curl up on the sofa with year headphones next to the roaring fire, crank up LHS and sit back and enjoy our gift of holiday cheer.

LHS Show Notes #037

Announcements:

  • Texas LinuxFest is Saturday, April 10, 2010 at the Marchesa Event Center in Austin, Texas.
  • OGGCamp will take place at The Black-E in Liverpool on the 1st and 2nd of May.
  • The 2010 Southeast LinuxFest is set for June 12-13 at the Marriott at Renaissance Park hotel in Spartanburg, SC.
  • Due to problems with the existing service provider, the LHS website has moved to lhspodcast.info.
  • iTunes will be okay, but all other RSS feeds will need to update as the content is moved.
  • The new email address is info@lhspodcast.info. Messages will go to both Russ and Richard.
  • The last four episodes are in the RSS feed, but older episodes are unavailable at the moment. They will be there eventually.
  • Russ is working on making all the episodes available via BitTorrent.

  • Our guest tonight is Stormy Peters, executive director of the GNOME Foundation.
  • By the way, GNOME is pronounced "guh-nome".
  • Stormy discusses the purpose of the foundation, her role in it, and the GNOME project.
  • The Ubuntu 10.04 release will change the default location of the window controls in the "Light" theme.
  • GNOME 3 is expected in September, 2010. New features include the GNOME Shell and the Activity Journal using the Zeitgeist engine. It should be available as a beta test option in Ubuntu 10.04.
  • Stormy and our hosts discuss some of the new features in GNOME 3, scheduled for release in September, 2010.
  • Check out Episode 011 of the Today in Tech Radio podcast for GNOME 3 installation tips.
  • There will be, in GNOME 3, a "dock-like" area on the desktop to receive notifications without changing the focus of your active application.
